40 Ideas → 9 Boxes: How Our Mother’s Day Collection Came Together

The process, inspiration & intentions behind Mother's Day Gift Collection. Starting in the year before all the planning & details that go into our gifts.

Behind the Scenes: Creating Our Mother’s Day Collection

Mother’s Day doesn’t happen overnight for My Goody Bag.
It begins months in advance — long before the first ribbon is tied or the first box is packed.

It starts with a feeling, an intention of how I want Mum's to feel… and a plan

1. Planning the Moments That Matter

Every collection begins with the calendar.

We map out everything:

  • The occasion date
  • When the Collection goes live
  • Final shipping cut-offs
  • Production timelines

And then… the practical magic.

How many products do we need?
How many boxes, ribbons, and wraps?
How many truckloads of chocolate, lollies and bubbles are we ordering — and by when?

It’s part logistics, part anticipation.

2. The Design Concept (aka the Pinterest Rabbit Hole)

This is where things get a little dreamy.

We start by asking:
What do we want Mum to feel when she receives this?

Then we dive headfirst into inspiration — colours, textures, styling, moods. Yes, Pinterest plays a big role (with a strict time limit… sometimes).

From this, a moodboard is created — capturing the overall vibe of the collection.

This year, it led me to pink and yellow.
Pink for softness and femininity.
Yellow for joy, warmth, and optimism.

Together, they created something fresh, uplifting, and full of love.

3. Design Development & Refinement

Now the real play begins.

I “shop” our own stock cupboards, connect with suppliers, and start building combinations. Food, drink, keepsakes — all carefully considered.

Some combinations work beautifully.
Others… don’t quite make it.

And that’s part of the process.

I test, tweak, and refine — always coming back to how it will look, feel, and be experienced by the person receiving it.

4. The Selection

At this point, I’ve usually designed 30–40 potential options.

Then comes the hard part — narrowing it down. I have to put my wants and wishes to one side and think about the customer and their Mum.

Each round of review refines the collection further until only the strongest remain.

This year, we landed on nine final Goody Bags and boxes — each with its own mood, personality, and purpose.

5. Sourcing, Styling & The Details

With the collection locked in, we move into sourcing and costing.

I select products that not only taste incredible (yes, taste testing is part of the job!) but visually align with the collection — from indulgent chocolates to both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

At the same time, there is packaging to consider:

  • Designing custom wraps
  • Creating packaging for loose items
  • Sourcing ribbons, papers, and finishing touches
  • Obsessing over the smallest details (yes, even the perfect sticker)

Because the magic is often in the details.

6. The Unwrapping Experience

I think deeply about this part.

How does it feel to receive?
To open?
To unwrap, layer by layer?

We’re not just creating gifts — we’re creating moments.

Whether it’s indulgent, playful, or calming, every bag is designed to feel like a complete experience.

7. Photography, Copy & Creative

Then comes one of the biggest stages — bringing it all to life visually.

Every bag is photographed and filmed across multiple platforms:

  • Website
  • Social (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest)
  • Email and blog

And it’s rarely straightforward.

I’ll start shooting, then suddenly have a better idea — so I reshoot.
And sometimes… reshoot again.

From there:

  • Images are edited
  • Copy is written and refined
  • Everything is proofread (because details matter here too)

8. Last-Minute Ideas (Because There Are Always Some)

No matter how organised we are, there’s always a final spark.

A small tweak.
A new idea.
Something I just have to include.

These moments often arrive late at night… right before launch.

And honestly, they’re usually worth it.

9. Then We Go LIVE

There’s a brief moment of calm when the collection goes live…

And then it’s straight into action.

Orders start coming in.
Questions are answered.
Personal messages are written.

Back in our warehouse, each Goody Bag is carefully assembled at our packing tables — wrapped, styled, and finished “just so.”

Then handed over to the courier… and sent on its way.

From our hands to hers.

Why It Matters

For us, Mother’s Day is about more than gifting.

It’s about creating something thoughtful, cohesive, and genuinely special — from the first idea to the final unwrapping moment.

Every colour, every product, every ribbon is chosen with care.

So that when it arrives, she doesn’t just receive a gift…

She feels it.
